General view of Chernivtsi Drama Theater in Teatralna Sq and the monument to Olha Kobylyanska in front of it
Olha Kobylyanska was born in Gura Humorului, a town near Suceava, the Southern (now Romanian) part of Bukovyna, in 1863. In 1891 the family moved to Chernivtsi where Olha acted as the Head of the Russian Women's Community in Bukovyna maintaining contacts with prominent Ukrainian cultural leaders from Eastern Ukraine.
Olha died in 1942 leaving a huge literary heritage not only in Ukrainian, but also in German language.
Olha Kobylyanska's cultural and social effect in Bukovyna was extremely huge, for which reason her name was given to the most beautiful street of Chernivtsi and to the City Drama Theater. In 1980 sculptors A. Skyba and M. Miroshnychenko erected, based on the design by O.Taratuta, a bronze statue of sitting Olha in front of the Theater named after her.
